Weight Loss Surgeries

If one is obese and is tired of dieting and regular exercises, a surgery may seem to be the only light at the end of the tunnel. A weight loss surgery will definitely seem to be your only rescue when everything else has failed. A surgery will make you thin again? It does sound quite refreshing and relieving to know that the sack of that extra flesh which one was carrying throughout the years will finally get to leave you but, on a second thought, is it really worth being under the knife? A detailed analysis will let us know the real problems associated with weight loss surgery or “bariatric surgery”.

How it is done:
A weight loss surgery involves modification of the gastrointestinal tract so that the gastric juice secretion is reduced considerably or the absorption of the digested food is reduced by the stomach. It is unlike surgeries like liposuction which cuts off the excess fat from the body and then stitches the skin without the excess fat. Liposuction is an instantaneous way to cut off fat where as bariatric surgery only curbs the hunger permanently. It is unlike a crash diet which one will fail to keep up with for a long time. A bariatric surgery is almost like a permanent crash dieting which does not make you undergo a painful starvation. Hence the result is a permanent one. Right after the surgery a liquid based diet with no sugar is given. It is advised not to have a full stomach as it may lead to nausea and vomiting. It may take the patient 3-4 days to recuperate. The gastric juice secretion of the liver is reduced by tying a silicon band on the bile duct so that the bile juice secretion is reduced. Another way to reduce hunger is by tying up the stomach and thus dividing it into two parts. This will ensure lesser surface absorption area for the stomach to take in the complex food material. After this procedure, the small intestine is directly connected to the acting part of the stomach. This makes our digestive system complete and acting the way it was before.

Associated side effects:
The most important question associated with a weight loss surgery is however not the mechanism but the side effect which comes with it. In around 60% cases a low mortality rate has been observed. People undergoing these surgeries have reportedly said to have suffered from severe mal nourishment 4-5 years down the lane. Since we deny our body a normal diet required for its metabolism, body back fires and becomes susceptible to diseases. We gradually don’t feel hungry and the desire to eat dies. There are many people who have to take nutrient supplementary pills throughout their lifetime as they cannot have a healthy balanced diet forever. Hence the desire to have a good shape is yearned by all but the price we have to pay for it comes with the compromise of our physical health and acute dependency on supplementary nutrient pills for our entire lifetime.
